Introducing New Facebook Groups | Upgraded with New Features

Few weeks back Facebook released the brand new Facebook Groups. This is quite a huge surprise; many have guessed that ‘group’ is outdated and hardly competable to the almighty facebook page. The renovated facebook groups proved the other way around. Well, maybe not completely, but in what condition we may use Facebook Groups?

-          Network with family members

-          Private discussion groups with colleagues/ friends

And much more, anything when a public facebook page cannot fulfill your focused discussions.

What Makes a Group Special?

A group encourages a focused discussion and it can either be public or a closed network – very much different from facebook pages that are all about getting viral for brand awareness, target fans, multiple campaigns and wall engagement with fans. Group has a lot to do with whom we are connecting with on facebook for we can create and invite (or better, add) people from our friend list easily.

Open, Closed and Secret Groups

There three group types given – Open, Closed and Secret:

Open – Members and content are public

Closed – Members are public, content is private

Secret – Members and content are private

While it used to be that secret groups are not listed in Facebook Search, still yet to verify that if the same rule applies to new groups.

Groups to replace facebook lists

A lot of speculations going on about the new groups replacing facebook lists. Why not? Instead of creating a ‘static’ management list, you are now setting up personal social network with live chats and posts from other group members, which makes it far more responsive than ever. Your friends will thank you for saving their time in creating an active space among your trusted friends.

More control at the sidebar for Groups

From a less attractive yellow button that brings no update to our news feed, each named group can now make users more alert to the groups they are a member of, thanks to the sidebar control. You can interswitch the groups to check out latest discussions and respond to updates easily.

Notifications for Group updates

Talking about revolution, you can receive (email) notifications for group updates – one of the most wanted features for a fan page but yet to have! A way of saying: members are having control as well over the groups they are participating, especially when it’s an open group. Members can always opt out from the notifications from ‘Edit Notifications’. The power of an admin can only be seen in private groups where members need to get pre-approval from admin before joining.

No more Private Messeges from Group Admin

What used to be a winning feature over facebook page, now is no longer available but rather, members will be notified and been brought to the main group interface and respond to new posts.

Ability to post documents (Docs)

It may not be as robust as the Google Docs but surely, a cool feature from facebook. Even pages need third party applications for file uploading. Now in the new facebook groups, members can share basic text documents easily with other members.

Group Chat

One of the smartest upgrades in my opinion. The chat window is the same as our normal profiles, but members can easily engage in a real time discussion when needed.

What about old groups?

Facebook will continue to support the existing old groups, as how facebook responded about replacing fbml with iframes. If only old groups can be converted to the new platform that will be superb, or simply, enhance the old interface by adding all those cool features above. But, sadly no.

We definitely appreciate such revolution for new groups, especially those who are already a group devotee. But it is unlikely that page users will make the switch to Groups, if intended to keep things commercial and share-able. Anyhow, it may be a perfect fit for certain organizations that prefer better control over secret groups and discussions. Do you enjoy the brand new facebook Groups?
