Facebook Places | A New Geotagging Revolution

No Comments Facebook announced the new feature ‘Places’ few days ago, a location based functionality that caught every user’s attention. But this new launch is only available for US users for now (not all states at once but gradually expanding). In order to use it, the user needs to have a mobile device. Facebook iPhone users can download the latest version of Facebook iPhone application or access it from touch.facebook.com .
What is so special about Facebook Places?
It is about finding friends and buiding stories from checked in places.
A friend can share interesting places they discovered, it could be a restaurant or a new coffee house. Find out your favorite spots from friends’ recommendations. Another cool thing is you can find out who among your friends are there at the same spot or nearby if you all are checking in at the same time.
To check in a place, just look for the ‘Check in’ button and you will see a list of places near you. Select your place, or search and add it. Then check in to create a story to be shown in your friends’ News Feed.
How does tagging work?
Just like how we did in status updates or photo-tagging, we can tag our friends along before check in. It is up to personal account’s privacy settings to decide whether the tagging can be done.
Other geotagging services are integrating their service with Facebook Places: Gowalla, Yelp, Booyah, Foursquare. Facebook and geotagging, well there is bound to be a whole lot of new and rich experience there.
Is Places for business?
If you own a business, check yourself in the premise is the first thing to do. Add it to Places and head right to that place’s page to claim it as your business. Then it will become a facebook page, where you get to post business updates to people who liked your Place.
Places has yet to go international but rest assured we will be testing it out soon enough. In the mean time, make sure your mobile browser can support geolocation and HTML 5.
